ABOUT

GEORGEWONGDESIGN is a New York–based international design studio specializing in modern and contemporary hospitality environments. Operating from its Manhattan headquarters, the firm delivers high-end hotel, resort, restaurant, and mixed-use projects across The Americas, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia for leading global brands and independent operators.

The studio’s work is driven by the belief that successful hospitality design must engage guests both emotionally and experientially. Each project is conceived as a complete sensory narrative, where spatial planning, materiality, lighting, and detailing work in harmony to create environments that are memorable, intuitive, and enduring.

GEORGE WONG

Hospitality Designer | Creative Director | Mentor

George Wong is an internationally recognized hospitality interior designer with more than four decades of professional experience across Asia, Europe, and North America. His design foundation was shaped by a multigenerational family background in furniture making and interior fit-out in Hong Kong, where early exposure to craftsmanship, materials, and construction nurtured his understanding of how design intent becomes built reality. This environment also fostered his lifelong engagement with the arts, visual thinking, and material exploration.

George began his career in the 1980s designing landmark hotels such as the Mandarin Hong Kong, the Shangri-La Valley Wing, and two John Portman–designed properties at Singapore’s Marina Centre. During the following decade in Hong Kong, he contributed to luxury hotel projects for leading global brands including Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, Conrad Hilton, Hyatt, Shangri-La, Aman Resorts, Regent, and Four Seasons—experience that grounded his knowledge of large-scale collaboration, international standards, and culturally responsive design.

Relocating to New York City in 1999, George joined Yabu Pushelberg to lead their New York office. From 2002 to 2006, he scouted out promising young telents and expanded the studio from two to sixteen designers and helped establish its prominence in hotel design. His work there included the St. Regis Bal Harbour, Palms Place Condo Hotel in Las Vegas, the MGM Grand West Wing renovation, the Grand Hyatt Moscow, and early concepts for The Standard New York, alongside multiple restaurant, retail, and residential commissions.

Throughout his career, George has mentored designers at all levels, guiding teams through concept development, material selection, detailing, and client presentation. His approach emphasizes process-driven thinking, material intelligence, clear communication, and an understanding of the practical realities of professional practice. He continues to champion hand sketching as a vital tool for ideation and design clarity.

A multidisciplinary artist, George is also a portrait painter, analog SLR photographer, and certified studio ceramics instructor—disciplines that reinforce his emphasis on observation, material exploration, and iterative creativity through design mentorship.

He is a graduate of the Swire School of Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where he completed his formal design education in 1982.
